NEWS

The annual Matt Thornton Seminar in Reno went off without a hitch. Thank you to all who attended.

Friday started the event with Matt teaching guard transitioning. The night ended with long time student Jack Valerio getting his blue belt after a tough Iron Man session with all the attendants of the seminar. Great job by Jack and huge congratulations.

Saturday started with SBGi BJJ BB Lily Pagle teaching throws/takedowns in the typical SBGi format. This was definitely a hit of the seminar. Matt went on to teach with an awesome guard passing series. Finally Matt ended with a segment he liked to call advanced rolling which was a highlight of the seminar. As always a great seminar. We had all kinds of new faces and one coming all the way from Canada, Andy Campbell. Thanks to all again and don't forget about Fall Camp in Mexico. Get ready for Spring Camp announcement.

SBGi Spring Camp 2011

March 26th, 27th and 28th in Berkeley Ca.

Friday was as usual a meet and greet and free roll time. The class was spilt up into five groups and each group was given a BJJ black belt to answer there deepest BJJ questions.

Saturday started with Matt teaching his F.I.T. guard passing game, which lasted a little over two hours. Travis D. stepped up and taught his cross sides top game, which consisted of holds, chokes and few other surprises. Dax Soto earned his much deserved Purple Belt during a traditional SBGi hour long iron man session with 35 plus people. Excellent job by Soto. RayPrice earned his Brown Belt in the same fashion.

Sunday had an excellent section taught by BJJ BB Cane Prevost on drilling and how to acomplish your teaching goals. Probably where the most information was learned the entire camp, great section and excellent coach. Sunday finished off how friday started with all the BJJ BB's breaking up the class into groups and answering questions.

SBGi Spring Camp 2010!

Fri, Sat, Sun March 26th – 28th

At SBGi NV Team Reno!!!

Spring Camp was truly amazing and filled with great instruction.

Friday - This was a free roll meet and greet night. There was a lot of personal one on one instruction. Met a bunch of great people and everyone got to test their skills against other SBGi gyms.

Saturday - Started with free roll warm up then went right into Jits with Steve Whitier. Steve went over passing with rudder, squat, and hip in pressures. Steve showed many transitions and how to shut down your opponents movement. Did some more free roll and then broke for lunch. Came back to a very energetic John Kavanagh. John taught seated guard attacks to limit pressure on your neck and spine. John taught three options with your opponent kneeling and three options from standing. Mainly it came down to posture. Saturday ended with Rick Davison getting his well deserved Black Belt in BJJ. Rick rolled for 1 hour and 10 minutes straight.

Sunday - Started with free roll warm up and went right into guard for MMA with James Davis. James went over the hierarchy when playing guard in the MMA realm. James showed the pressures and how to address each one. Steve Whitier came back with a Thai Boxing section. Steve taught pressure when using the double neck tie, movement, posture, and various striking from a desired position. Broke for lunch and came back to free roll. Finished the day with open question and answer. Several questions were brought up and each coach addressed the issues. Camp was great and I am sorry it is over.

Fall Camp will be at Steve's place back East near Cape Cod. It is scheduled sometime in October.

WINTER CAMP SYNOPSIS:

FRIDAY: Doors opened at 6pm and the free rolls began. Lots of talent on the mat and bunch of cool people. Typical SBGi vibe. Matt addressed the group and stated there would be no formal training but encouraged everyone to roll. Matt further offered his coaches to walk around and answer any questions. The rolling stopped around 10pm.

Saturday: For once in the history of camps it started on time, right at 10am. Kisa Davison warmed everyone up with a great yoga session. 10:30am James Davis did an awesome job with the cage surfing section. Great drills and it really showed me a hole in my game. 11:30am Travis Davision taught a brilliant section off of the hip bump sweep. Break for lunch. 2:30pm Matt taught an awesome eye opening section on how to teach. This made me really re-think how I will teach in the future. 4pm John Kavanagh warmed us up with Ape movement drills and went right into his guillotine choke game. Afterwards Travis Davison went through a grueling roll session with the entire seminar for his well deserved BLACK BELT!!!

Sunday: Kisa Davison warmed everyone up with yoga again, it was a good way to start the day. Brian Walsh as always gave an outstanding class on boxing. Brian isolated several areas and drilled us hard. Brett from Sweden SBGi taught a useful section on posture from cross sides bottom. Broke for lunch. Kavanagh taught 5 essential moveSments (No, it is not a type O) for jiu jitsu. Brett from Sweden rolled and was awarded his Brown Belt!!! Congrats
